Unpublished 5-03-10 Camp ASL 2010 Friday, April 30th - Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 Come join us for this Deaf World Immersion weekend! A silent weekend filled with games, workshops and fun!!! What is Camp ASL? Who is Camp ASL for? All Deaf presenters! Plus many Deaf mentors! Experience what is like to be Deaf for a full weekend!!! Workshop Descriptions: Presented by Gretchen Ricci The purpose of this workshop is to educate interpreters on how to work with Deaf professionals in educational settings. This workshop will consist of lecture, hands-on activity and discussion about the following:· Understanding values and beliefs regarding Deaf Culture· Building professional relationships with Deaf professionals· Understanding Deaf professionals’ values, beliefs and code of conduct· Understanding the interpreter’s role as an advocate and communication facilitator. “I Can Do It! - Interpreting Challenging Situations” Presented by Jessalyn Frank, M.Ed The purpose of this workshop is to explore with interpreters situations that may be sensitive, require more legal information and are more than the “day to day” job. Situations that include law enforcement, courts, shelters, domestic violence “home” calls, video relay calls, support groups, Sexuality, HIV/AIDS testing and hospital scenes. Students will participate in discussion groups, hands on activity, role play and receive some lecture. Students:· Will learn about Deaf victims and their perspective when working with interpreters in “challenging” situations· Will learn ways to handle situations that may not be comfortable· Will gain insight on various interpreter/ Deaf client scenarios for discussion· Will discuss various interpreters’ ethnics, codes and approaches for different situations· Will discuss how vagarious trauma impacts them and create a note list for a support system. "Reframing: Exploring the Impact of Ideology on Cross Cultural Interactions" Presented by Alison L. Aubrecht Focusing on ideology, this interactive presentation strives to encourage participants to reflect on beliefs and values about the four letter word, d-e-a-f. Participants will be introduced to concepts of power, privilege, and social justice as applied to interactions between hearing and deaf individuals. This Professional Study (PS) program is offered for a total of 1.1 CEUs at the little/none content knowledge level.
